About Us and How We Choose Snorkeling Trips

Key West Reef Snorkeling is an independent guide to snorkeling trips from Key West: morning and afternoon reef trips, sunset sails, two-reef and dolphin combos, small sailboats and private charters. We do not run boats, sell tickets or represent any operator. Our job is to help you pick the right trip, understand what it costs and know what to check before you pay.

Who we are

The site is written and edited by the Key West Reef Snorkeling editors. We read the listings, the operators’ own terms, official sources and traveler reviews, and we update pages when prices, rules or inclusions change. We do not claim to have been out on every boat on this site, and we do not write as if we had: where a page describes a trip, it is built from the operator’s published itinerary and from what snorkelers report in their reviews.

How we choose and compare trips

Key West snorkel trips look alike on a listing page and differ in the details. For each trip we review, we look at:

  • The real price on the booking schedule for the option you would book, not the headline teaser, and whether it is per person or per boat.
  • How long the trip lasts and how much of it is spent in the water, where the listing says.
  • Where you check in. Departure points differ by operator, from the Historic Seaport to Opal Key Resort & Marina on Front Street and marinas on Stock Island.
  • How many snorkel stops the trip makes and whether the listing names a reef. Captains choose the site on the day, so we never promise one.
  • The boat: a big catamaran, a sailboat or schooner, or a small private boat, and any group limit the operator publishes.
  • What is included: gear, flotation, wetsuits, drinks and food, and when the alcohol is served.
  • Swimming rules, age rules and anything the listing says the trip is not suitable for.
  • Cancellation terms on the platform.
  • Rating and number of reviews, plus what low-star reviews complain about, such as crowded boats or choppy rides.

We then group trips by the kind of traveler they suit: budget snorkelers, first-timers, families, small-group fans, sunset seekers and groups who want a private boat.

Where our numbers come from

Prices and ratings are checked on Viator and GetYourGuide. The figures on this site were checked in November 2026, and each page says so. We round prices to whole US dollars and say when a price is per group.

Ratings and review counts are the platforms’ own figures on the date we checked, rounded to one decimal place and always given with the number of reviews and the platform. We do not edit, select or write reviews to change a trip’s score.

Practical facts come from primary sources wherever we can find them:

  • NOAA and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary for reef locations, depths, protected zones and reef rules.
  • NOAA’s water temperature records and the National Weather Service for monthly water and air temperatures.
  • The National Park Service for seasons and weather in the waters west of Key West.
  • The City of Key West for parking rates, and Florida law for the state’s sunscreen rules.
  • The operators’ own websites and terms for check-in times, swimming rules and weather policies, which we attribute to the operator by name.

When sources disagree, we say so or give the range. When we cannot confirm something, we leave it out.

What we will not do

  • We do not accept payment from operators for placement, rankings or reviews. Our picks are not for sale.
  • We do not promise a named reef, clear water or any particular sighting. The captain chooses the site on the day, and marine life is never guaranteed.
  • We do not call any boat “safe”. We tell you what the operator requires, such as swimming ability, and what the conditions can be like.
  • We do not claim live availability. The booking platform shows the real price and the open departures for the date you choose.

How the site is funded

When you book through our links to Viator, GetYourGuide or a hotel booking site, we may earn a commission. It does not change the price you pay, and it does not decide which trip we recommend. The affiliate disclosure explains how this works.
