Reef or sandbar
Which Trip Suits Your Day
Pick a reef trip if fish and coral are the point, and a sandbar day if you want a long, slow day in shallow water with kayaks, floats and lunch. A reef trip takes about three hours and puts you in the water for roughly half an hour to an hour, on a reef Fury’s FAQ places about seven miles offshore. A sandbar day lasts three and a half to five hours in the shallow backcountry, where you wade more than you swim, and costs $110 to $161 per person against $49 to $79 for a reef trip (checked November 2026). Our pick for a shared sandbar day is Sunset Watersports’ sandbar and kayak tour with lunch: five hours, $161 on Viator with 4.8 from 428 reviews, or $150 on its GetYourGuide twin (4.8 from 203). | Reef snorkel trip | Sandbar day | |
|---|---|---|

| Water | NOAA gives 5 to 35 feet at the Key West reefs | Shallow enough to wade, when the tide allows |
| Time on the trip | About 3 hours | 3.5 to 5 hours |
| Main activity | Snorkeling coral and reef fish | Wading, floating, paddling, kayaking |
| Snorkeling | The whole point | Optional, near sand and mangroves |
| Food | Usually drinks only; some include breakfast | Lunch on the Fury and Sunset Watersports trips |
| Price per person | $49 to $79 | $110 to $161 |
The reef trip is the better buy if you are a confident swimmer and want to see the reef itself. Even then, the crew chooses the site on the day by conditions, and nobody can promise turtles or a particular reef. Our reef snorkeling tours page covers those trips, and the cheap snorkeling page starts at $49.
The sandbar day suits groups who want to spend a whole morning or afternoon on the water, families with children who would sooner stand than swim, and anyone who wants lunch and drinks built into the price. Our family snorkeling page goes further on trips for children.
The shared sandbar trips
Sunset Watersports’ sandbar and kayak tour leaves the Historic Seaport at 11:00 for five hours. The listing describes a guided kayak tour through the mangroves of the Mud Keys, lunch served on the way to a sandbar in Jewfish Basin, then time with paddleboards, a lily pad, water toys and snorkel gear. Unlimited draft beer, wine and soft drinks start once the kayaking is done, and a captain and two crew run each trip. Gratuities are extra. Of the few lower-star reviews, one mentions weather cutting the kayak tour short, another a guide who knew little about the area, and a Viator reviewer warns that the kayak tour goes out in groups, so part of the boat waits in the sun while the others paddle.
Fury’s Island Adventure sandbar tour with kayaking is the cheaper shared option at $110, three and a half hours, with 11:00 and 15:00 departures on Viator and 4.7 from 629 reviews. You check in at the Fury booth on the corner of Greene and Elizabeth streets, next to Conch Republic Seafood Company. The catamaran carries kayaks, paddleboards, a lily pad and floats, there is a guided mangrove kayak tour, and lunch is included. Snorkel gear is not on its list of inclusions, so treat this as a paddle-and-wade day. Its GetYourGuide twin costs the same and warns that sandbar exposure depends on tides and conditions and is not guaranteed. Our Fury Island Adventure review
Sebago’s sandbar safari on a tiki boat is the party version: three and a half hours on the Lazy Lady, with beach games, floats, water mats and drinks, including alcohol. No lunch or snorkel gear is listed. It averages $150 on Viator (4.7 from 202), but the schedule showed $130 and $190 for two sailings on one Saturday in November, and the GetYourGuide listing was $130 with an open bar of beer, wine and sangria (4.8 from 53). Check-in is at Sebago’s office on Lazy Way Lane by the Historic Seaport.
Trips that do both
If you want the reef and the sandbar on one day, two listings in our data combine them, both with a short season.
- Honest Eco’s sunset sail, reef snorkel and sandbar is $143, four and a half hours, with guided snorkeling and a 42-foot sailing catamaran (5.0 from 56 on Viator). The listing calls it summer only.
- Danger Charters’ sandbar, snorkel and sunset sail is $135 on a schooner, with snorkeling in backcountry waters, sandbar games and floats. Viator showed no rate on our test Saturday, and its GetYourGuide copy opened only from May 2027.
Outside those seasons, two of the private boats below, Danger Charters’ and Dolphin Safari’s, list both snorkeling and a sandbar.
Private sandbar charters
For a group of four to six, a private boat can cost about the same per person as a shared sandbar day.
- Stock Island Charters’ private sandbar adventure: $500 per group of up to six, three hours, with snorkel gear, a paddleboard and water. Rated 5.0 from 52 on Viator. Our review
- Danger Charters’ private six-person sandbar and snorkel charter: $749 per group, four hours, with snorkel gear, snacks and soft drinks, leaving from Opal Key Resort. Rated 5.0 from 32. Our review
- Dolphin Safari’s private half day: $966 per group of up to six, four hours, with dolphin watching, snorkeling and a sandbar. Rated 4.9 from 35. Our review
Six people on the Stock Island boat pay about $83 each. Our private charters page compares the wider list.
What you actually do at a sandbar
A sandbar is a bank of sand in shallow water; depending on the tide it sits just under the surface or above it. The boat stops at the edge and you climb down into water you can stand in. From the listings, the time there goes on floating on lily pads and mats, paddleboarding, tossing a ball, wading and, where gear is carried, snorkeling around the sand and nearby mangroves. NOAA notes that green and loggerhead turtles graze on seagrass, but no listing promises wildlife.
Fury does not serve alcohol until all water activities are finished, and turns away anyone who arrives drinking. Fury also asks you to bring photo ID, a towel, sunscreen, sun-protective clothing and water shoes or waterproof sandals; towels are not supplied on the Fury or Danger Charters trips.
Tides and conditions
We have no tide tables to give you, and the listings do not publish set times. What they do say is consistent: the sandbar depends on the tide. Fury’s GetYourGuide listing says sandbar exposure is not guaranteed, and other operators say the captain picks the sandbar by the day’s weather and tides. Backcountry water is very shallow, and US Fish and Wildlife warns boaters about running aground there, which is one reason to leave the navigation to a licensed crew.
Weather matters too. The National Park Service, writing about the Dry Tortugas west of Key West, says winter is usually windier than summer, with rougher seas. A windy day can shorten a kayak tour or move the stop, and the crew may cancel in unsafe conditions. Fury’s FAQ says it tries to reschedule you during your stay if that happens. For safety questions in and out of the water, see is it safe to snorkel in Key West.

Snorkeling and Sandbar Tours: FAQ
Short answers on sandbar days, tides, safety and how they differ from a reef trip.
A boat trip into the shallow backcountry that stops at a sandbar, where you can wade, float, paddleboard and sometimes snorkel. Most include a guided mangrove kayak tour and lunch. A reef trip instead goes offshore to snorkel coral. Shared sandbar days cost $110 to $161 per person on the listings we review.
On some trips. Sunset Watersports' sandbar day includes snorkel gear, and Stock Island Charters' private boat carries it too. Fury's Island Adventure does not list snorkel gear. Expect sand, seagrass and mangrove edges, not a coral reef.
Yes. Fury's listing says sandbar exposure depends on tides and conditions and is not guaranteed, and other operators say the captain picks the sandbar by the day's weather and tides. The listings do not publish tide times.
Fury gives every snorkeler a flotation device and Sunset Watersports provides vests and noodles; NOAA advises a snorkel vest for beginners and never standing on coral. Operators set their own rules: Fury, for example, requires you to know how to swim to snorkel and serves alcohol only after water activities. More in is it safe to snorkel in Key West.
None of the snorkel or sandbar trips in our data sells swimming with sharks. Key West Extreme Adventures runs a shark and wildlife viewing trip where guests stay on the boat; its listing says bait draws lemon, nurse and other sharks to the side of the boat.
It rates 4.7 from 202 reviews on Viator and 4.8 from 53 on GetYourGuide. It is a three-and-a-half-hour tiki-boat trip with beach games, floats and drinks, but no lunch or snorkel gear listed. It averages $150 per person on Viator.
