How to Choose a Dolphin and Snorkel Trip

Four simple steps to your booking.

  1. Pick your time of day

Fury and Honest Eco run morning and afternoon trips. Sunset Watersports' GetYourGuide trip finishes with a sunset cruise on the way home.

  2. Decide how much snorkeling you want

Most combos snorkel in shallow backcountry water. If coral on the outer reef matters most, book a reef trip and treat dolphins as a bonus.

  3. Choose your boat size

Honest Eco caps groups at 16, Dolphin Echo at 14 and Dolphin Safari's small boats at 6. Fury's listing gives no cap.

  4. Keep expectations wild

These are wild dolphins watched from the deck. Fury's own listing says sightings are not guaranteed, and so do the small-boat operators.

Dolphin tours

Choosing a Key West Dolphin and Snorkel Tour

For most people, the best-value dolphin and snorkel combo in Key West is Fury’s Dolphin Watch and Snorkel Tour: $73 per person for three hours (checked November 2026), rated 4.7 from 1,247 reviews on Viator. The same trip sells on GetYourGuide as Fury’s Dolphin Watching and Snorkeling Eco Cruise, also $73, rated 4.6 from 876 reviews. A 45-foot power catamaran looks for wild bottlenose dolphins while the guides explain their behavior, then anchors in the Key West wildlife refuge, where you snorkel over hard and soft corals and sea fans with stingrays and juvenile fish. Soft drinks are unlimited, and beer and wine come out after snorkeling. It leaves from the Fury booth at the corner of Greene and Elizabeth streets, at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. You must know how to swim to snorkel, and the GetYourGuide listing says plainly that dolphin sightings are not guaranteed. Fury, Honest Eco, Sunset Watersports or Dolphin Echo?

The four trips look alike on paper but feel quite different on the water: boat size, how much guiding you get in the water, the time of day and the drinks all vary.

Fury Water Adventures: the most reviewed

Fury’s trip is the lowest-priced dolphin and snorkel combo we track (tied with its own GetYourGuide twin), and the most reviewed. The big catamaran, two daily departures and a seasonal sunset version with champagne make it easy to fit in. The snorkel stop is in sheltered backcountry water, which suits beginners, but it is a refuge snorkel, not a stop on the offshore reef line. Fury does not print a group cap on this listing.

Honest Eco: biologist-led, with a guide in the water

Honest Eco’s Dolphin Watching and Guided Snorkeling costs $143 per person for four hours and is rated 4.9 from 598 reviews on Viator, the highest rating of the dolphin trips on this page. The company is biologist owned, and its crew is trained by its biologists. The boat, Squid, is a custom catamaran built to be quiet around wildlife. On the GetYourGuide version, Honest Eco says its area is home year-round to more than 200 wild bottlenose dolphins and that it can usually find them in under an hour. After watching, the mate leads you around a calm spot with sponges, coral heads or reef and points out the animals. Groups average 11 guests, with a maximum of 16. Bottled water and organic snacks are included and no alcohol is listed. You board at the bottom of the Waterfront Brewery steps in Key West Bight, and the listing warns that the marina lot costs about $20 to $30 a day. Our review.

Sunset Watersports: dolphins, then the sunset

Sunset Watersports’ Dolphin Watching and Snorkeling Sunset Cruise on GetYourGuide costs $80 per person for three hours and is rated 4.4 from 575 reviews. After the dolphins, the boat heads to the small islands at Cottrell Key in the Key West National Wildlife Refuge to snorkel, then cruises home at sunset with draft beer. NOAA describes Cottrell Key as a mangrove island about 9 miles northwest of Key West with a 300-foot no-motor zone around it. The Viator version, Sunset Watersports’ Dolphin and Snorkel Experience, costs $81 per person (4.4 from 374 reviews) with 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. departures from 201 William Street in Key West Bight. When we checked, the earliest GetYourGuide date was 9 November. A theme in the reviews: the dolphins tend to impress more than the snorkel stop. Our review.

Dolphin Echo: 14 seats and a shallow stop

Dolphin Echo’s Shallow Water Snorkeling and Dolphin Watching costs $109 per person for four hours and is rated 4.6 from 476 reviews on Viator. The sailing catamaran sells only about half its seats, 14 at most, and after the dolphins the captain picks a shallow stop at coral, a wreck or the refuge. Snacks, fruit, beer and wine are included. It is not free cancellation, since the operator uses its own two-week policy, and it does not take children under 5. It leaves from Dock D-30 at 201 William Street. The same company sells a Champagne Dolphin Sail and Reef Snorkel for $109 from the Perry Hotel & Marina, but it has only 11 reviews. Our review.

Small boats: Dolphin Safari Charters

For the smallest group, Dolphin Safari Charters’ small-group dolphin and snorkel tour costs $149 per person for three hours, with a maximum of six guests on a 25-foot boat, rated 4.8 from 130 reviews on Viator. Noodles and flotation devices are aboard. It needs at least three passengers; if not enough book, the operator offers to convert it to a private trip, reschedule or refund. The operator advertises a high sighting rate but says wild dolphin sightings aren’t guaranteed. Departures are from the Perry Hotel Marina on Stock Island, with free parking. If you would rather have the boat to yourselves, its half-day private charter is $966 per group of up to six for about four hours, adding a sandbar stop; see our private snorkeling charters page for the per-person math.

Wild dolphins are not guaranteed

Every trip here watches wild bottlenose dolphins, and none can promise them. Fury’s GetYourGuide listing says sightings are not guaranteed, Dolphin Safari says the same, and Six Fins’ private dolphin charter says wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Fury’s listing describes watching pods “from a respectful distance” from the boat. Snorkeling happens at a separate stop, so none of these trips is a swim with dolphins.

If dolphins are the main reason you are going, choose a trip with more time on the water, such as Honest Eco’s four hours, or a six-guest boat such as Dolphin Safari’s. If you want the most snorkeling for your money, a reef trip with dolphins as a bonus may suit you better.

Dolphin snorkel trip or a reef trip?

Most dolphin combos snorkel in the backcountry. Fury uses the wildlife refuge, Sunset Watersports goes to Cottrell Key, Dolphin Echo chooses between coral, a wreck or the refuge, and Honest Eco picks sponges, coral heads or reef for the day’s visibility. That water is sheltered and shallow, which suits beginners and children; see snorkeling for beginners and family snorkeling.

Reef boats go farther. Fury puts the living reef about seven miles offshore on the Atlantic side, and NOAA gives the reef spurs at Sand Key as about 5 to 20 feet deep. If coral spurs and reef fish are the point, compare Key West reef snorkeling tours or the two-stop double dip snorkel. For a sunset without dolphins, see the sunset snorkel page. And if a sandbar sounds better than a snorkel, Sunset Watersports’ Sandbar Safari with Dolphin Playground spends five hours on a sandbar and a dolphin watch for $161 per person, rated 4.8 from 704 reviews on Viator.

Practical notes

Fury asks you to check in 30 minutes before departure; Honest Eco boards 15 minutes before and does not refund guests who miss the boat. On Fury’s trip, guests 17 and under need a parent at check-in to sign the waiver. In winter, Honest Eco’s GetYourGuide listing includes wetsuits, and Fury says January and February visitors may prefer one. Fury requires reef-safe sunscreen and hands out mineral sunscreen on its snorkel trips; the city’s 2019 sunscreen ban never took effect, so this is an operator rule.
