Pick a morning snorkel trip in Key West if you want breakfast on board, the cheapest Fury fare and the rest of the day free. Pick an afternoon trip if you want to sleep in, and if an open bar on the ride home matters more to you than mimosas. Most of the big operators run the same three-hour reef trip at about 9:00 a.m. and again at about 1:00 p.m., on the same boat, to the same stretch of reef. No authority publishes data showing that one time of day has calmer water or clearer visibility off Key West, so treat any claim that mornings are “always calmer” as an opinion.
For a morning, Sebago’s Morning Snorkel Sail with Mimosas and Gourmet Breakfast is our pick: a 09:00 catamaran sail, $60 per person on most dates and $50 on some (checked November 2026), rated 4.7 from 212 reviews on Viator, the highest rating of the morning reef trips on this page.
Departure times, operator by operator
These are the start times in each listing’s schedule. All of these trips last about three hours, so add three hours to see when you are back on the dock.
| Operator and trip | Morning | Afternoon | Later option |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fury reef snorkel (Viator) | 09:30 | 13:00 | Rum & Reggae at 16:00 (separate listing) |
| Fury Double Dip | 10:30 | 14:00 | sunset combo March through August |
| Sunset Watersports Rise & Reef / Dip & Sip | 09:00 | 13:00 | two-reef sunset trip (seasonal) |
| Sebago morning sail / afternoon sail | 09:00 | 12:30 | none on these listings |
| Floridays Reef Snorkel & Sail | 09:00 | 13:00 | none on this listing |
So a morning trip has you back between about noon and 1:30 p.m., and an afternoon trip between about 3:30 and 5:00 p.m. Fury’s Rum & Reggae leaves at 16:00 and sails back around sunset, from $57 per person and rated 4.4 from 399 reviews on Viator; our sunset snorkel guide covers it.
Check-in adds time at the front. Fury asks for 30 minutes before departure; Sunset Watersports’ morning listing asks for 60. A 9:00 a.m. Rise & Reef therefore means leaving your hotel around 7:45.
Drinks and food: the real difference
The drinks are where morning and afternoon trips actually differ, and they differ by operator.
- Fury: mimosas, beer and wine after the morning trip; margaritas, beer and wine after the afternoon trip; rum punch on the sunset trip. On every Fury trip alcohol is served only after the snorkeling ends, and guests who arrive under the influence can be kept out of the water.
- Sunset Watersports: the morning Rise & Reef includes a light breakfast, with mimosas on the sail out according to its GetYourGuide listing, and beer on the way back. The afternoon Dip & Sip is sold as an open bar on the return.
- Sebago: the morning sail serves a gourmet breakfast and unlimited mimosas after the snorkel stop. The afternoon snorkel sail is sold on unlimited cocktails, from $60 and rated 4.4 from 1,621 reviews on Viator, the most reviewed afternoon trip in our list (our review).
If you do not drink, the morning trip with breakfast gives you more for the fare. A few low-star reviews of Fury’s reef trip say the value drops if you skip the free drinks. If the drinks are part of the point, the afternoon open-bar boats are built for you. Low-star reviews of the Sunset Watersports morning trip say the breakfast was light (cereal and muffins), so eat something first.
Prices: does time of day change the fare?
On Fury, yes. Its reef trip is from $49 per person at 9:30 a.m. and $57 at 1:00 p.m. on both Viator and GetYourGuide, an $8 difference for the same boat and reef (our Fury review). On the other big operators the morning and afternoon trips cost about the same:
- Sunset Watersports: Rise & Reef from $59 (4.5 from 744 reviews on Viator) and Dip & Sip from $59 (4.5 from 492 on Viator).
- Sebago: the morning sail is $60 on most dates and dipped to $50 on a Saturday we checked in mid-November; the afternoon sail is $60.
- Floridays: Reef Snorkel & Sail is $79 at either time (4.7 from 569 reviews on Viator).

Conditions: what is known and what is not
Here is what the sources support. The National Park Service, describing the Dry Tortugas 70 miles west, says winter cold fronts bring cooler, windier weather and that winter seas are usually rougher than summer seas. Summer brings frequent thunderstorms. None of that is broken down by time of day.
What we could not find is an authority or operator stating that mornings off Key West are calmer, that afternoon water is clearer, or that one slot gets cancelled more often. Visibility data for Key West’s reefs is not published by NOAA. The operators themselves treat the day as a whole: Fury’s listing says the snorkel site depends on the weather and the captain, Sebago says the captain picks the spot by water and wind, and Fury says it will not sail in unsafe weather and will try to rebook you during your stay.
That leaves two practical points. First, a morning trip on your first full day leaves more days in hand if a front cancels it. Second, check the forecast the evening before and ask the operator whether the trip is running; low-star reviews on both fleets describe going out in choppy water and wishing they had been rebooked.
Crowds, sun and the shape of your day
No operator publishes how full each departure is, and the listings use the same boats for both slots, so we cannot tell you that mornings are quieter. What changes is everything around the trip.
A morning trip suits you if:
- You want the afternoon for Duval Street, the beach or a nap after the sun.
- You are the person in your group who gets seasick: you can take medication the night before as the CDC suggests (trial it at home first), and you have the afternoon to recover.
- You are on a cruise and the ship sails in the afternoon. Royal Caribbean says all-aboard is usually 30 minutes before departure and ships do not wait for independent tours.
- You want breakfast included.
An afternoon trip suits you if:
- You arrived late the night before or like a slow start.
- Your group wants the open bar on the ride home.
- You want to go straight from the boat to dinner, or book Fury’s 16:00 Rum & Reggae and end at sunset.
Either way, wear sun protection. NOAA recommends mineral zinc oxide or titanium oxide sunscreen, hats, long sleeves and a rash guard, and Fury requires reef-safe sunscreen on its boats.
Which one we would book
