Key Largo snorkeling at John Pennekamp from $49.95 with about 1.5 hours in the water compared with Key West reef trips from $49 at mile marker 0

Snorkel in Key Largo if you are based in Miami or the Upper Keys, want the state-park experience at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, or want to see the Christ of the Abyss statue. Snorkel in Key West if you are already staying there, want to choose between a dozen boats and times, or want a reef trip that ends with drinks or a sunset. Both towns sit on the same reef tract inside the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, both reefs were hit by the 2023 marine heatwave, and no authority ranks one above the other for snorkeling. Prices are close: the park’s own snorkel tour is $49.95 per adult and Key West’s cheapest reef trip is from $49.

If you are in Key West, the morning trip we would point a first-timer to is Sunset Watersports’ Rise & Reef: breakfast, a 09:00 sail from the Historic Seaport on a 65-foot catamaran, gear and instruction, from $59 per person (checked November 2026), rated 4.5 from 744 reviews on Viator.

The Key Largo figures come from the park’s own snorkeling page and fee page. The park’s fees, as published: $8 per vehicle plus $0.50 per person for two to eight people, $4.50 for a single-occupant vehicle and $2.50 on foot or by bike; the park opens at 8 a.m. and closes at sunset. Check both pages before you go, as we could only read them through a search summary.

What you see on each reef

The honest answer is that both reefs offer the same kinds of life, because they are parts of one system. NOAA’s sanctuary snorkeling page lists what Keys snorkelers commonly see: sea turtles, parrotfish, stingrays, eels, sergeant majors, grunts, snappers, jacks, barrel sponges. None of it is guaranteed on any trip.

Both places also carry the same scar. The 2023 marine heatwave was the ninth mass bleaching on Florida’s Coral Reef since 1987 and the worst on record, and around the Keys and the Dry Tortugas 98 to 100% of elkhorn and staghorn coral colonies died. Fish, turtles and some coral remain at both ends of the Keys; the big branching thickets in older photos are largely gone. NOAA’s own pages for Sand Key, Rock Key and Eastern Dry Rocks warn that their coral descriptions may be out of date.

Off Key West, the reef sits about seven miles offshore on the Atlantic side, and NOAA gives depths of about 5 to 20 feet at Sand Key’s spurs and 5 to 35 feet at Rock Key and Eastern Dry Rocks. Eastern Dry Rocks is one of the seven Mission: Iconic Reefs restoration sites, with thousands of coral fragments planted. Our guide to the best snorkeling spots in Key West covers each reef. Either way, the captain chooses the site on the day.

Christ of the Abyss

The bronze Christ of the Abyss statue is the reason many people pick Key Largo. Pennekamp’s concession snorkeling page does not mention it, so do not assume the park tour goes there. Third-party coverage says Silent World Dive Center has run statue snorkel trips since June 2025, with three departures a day; reports of the statue’s depth vary, from about 7 feet below the surface in 22 feet of water to about 25 feet. Book directly with an operator that names the statue, and accept that conditions can move the trip.

Key West has no equivalent single sight. What it has instead is choice: half a dozen big operators, sailboats and schooners, two-reef trips, dolphin combos and sunset departures.

Getting between them

John Pennekamp sits at mile marker 102.5 on the Overseas Highway. The mile markers count up from Key West, so the park is roughly 100 road miles from Key West, and travel guides put the drive at about two to three hours each way depending on traffic. That makes a Key Largo snorkel a long day trip from Key West: about five hours of driving for about 1.5 hours in the water, plus park entry and gas.

Halfway between the two is Looe Key, off the Lower Keys. NOAA describes it as a classic spur-and-groove reef about 6.3 miles south of Ramrod Key, and it is a Mission: Iconic Reefs site. By our rough count it is about 30 miles of driving from Key West to the Big Pine Key area, then a boat ride.

If you are flying into Miami, Key Largo is the closer of the two. If you are driving all the way down, stay in Key West and snorkel there, or break the trip and snorkel Key Largo on the way.

Who should choose Key Largo

  • You are staying in Miami or the Upper Keys and want one snorkel day.
  • You want the Christ of the Abyss statue.
  • You want a state-park setting, a set tour schedule and about 1.5 hours in the water for about $50.
  • You are travelling with teenagers: the park’s under-18 fare is $45.95.

Who should choose Key West

  • You are already in Key West, or want a town with bars, restaurants and sunset at Mallory Square on the same day.
  • You want to pick your time and style of boat. A cheap morning trip, such as Fury’s reef snorkel, starts from $49 (our review).
  • You want more time on the reef from one boat: the Fury Double Dip stops at two locations, from $73 and rated 4.6 from 203 reviews on Viator.
  • You want drinks and a sunset: Fury’s Rum & Reggae at 16:00, from $57.
  • You want a small group: Floridays’ Reef Snorkel & Sail, $79, about an hour out, an hour at the reef and an hour back, rated 4.7 from 569 reviews on Viator (our review).
