Which Key West Snorkeling Tour Should You Book?
If you book one trip, make it Floridays’ Key West Reef Snorkel & Sail. It costs $79 per person on Viator (prices on this page checked November 2026), runs three hours at 09:00 and 13:00, and is rated 4.7 from 569 reviews on Viator. The listing describes about an hour out, an hour at the reef and an hour back, says the crew takes a limited number of guests, and includes a mask, snorkel, fins, a flotation vest, beer, wine, margaritas and champagne. The trade is price: the big catamarans charge $20 to $30 less. Our review
Below is the trip we would book for each kind of traveller, with what you give up.

Budget: Fury’s morning reef snorkel
Fury’s three-hour catamaran trip is the lowest price of the trips we review: $49 per person for the morning departure on GetYourGuide, $57 for the afternoon and evening departures. It checks in at 241 Front Street, on the dock behind Opal Key Resort & Marina. The listing gives snorkel time as roughly 30 to 60 minutes, and the beer, wine and mimosas come out only after everyone is back on board. You also need to know how to swim. In low-star reviews the recurring complaints are a crowded boat and choppy water on windy days. The same trip on Viator is rated lower, 4.2 from 704 reviews, so book it on GetYourGuide. Our review
Morning: Sunset Watersports Rise & Reef
The 09:00 Rise & Reef sails on Sunset Watersports’ 65-foot catamaran, the Sandie Cat, with a light breakfast on the way out, mimosas, and free beer and soft drinks on the sail back. It costs $59 per person on Viator, rated 4.5 from 744 reviews. Check-in is at 201 William Street at the Historic Seaport, and the operator asks you to arrive 60 minutes early. A few reviewers found the breakfast thin. If a smaller morning crowd matters more, look at Sebago’s Morning Snorkel Sail ($60, 4.7 from 212 on Viator). The morning snorkeling page compares every early boat. Our review
Afternoon and open bar: Sebago Afternoon Snorkel Sail
Sebago’s 12:30 catamaran is the most reviewed reef snorkel on this site, rated 4.4 from 1,621 reviews on Viator, at $60 per person with cocktails included. It checks in on Lazy Way Lane at the Historic Seaport, between Conch Republic and Schooner Wharf. The same trip on GetYourGuide shows a $45 headline, but the bookable price on its first date was $60. The 13:00 Sunset Watersports Dip & Sip costs $59 and is rated 4.5 from 492. Our afternoon snorkeling page covers both. Our review
Sunset: Fury Rum and Reggae
The 16:00 Rum and Reggae trip snorkels first, then serves rum punch, beer, wine and champagne on the sail back as the sun goes down. It costs $57 per person, rated 4.4 from 399 on Viator, and leaves from Opal Key Resort & Marina. Fury says winter reef water can dip into the mid-60s and rents wetsuits seasonally for $15. Sunset Watersports’ two-reef sunset trip only takes bookings again from early 2027, so check dates. See the sunset snorkel page. Our review
Two reefs: Fury Double Dip
The Double Dip stops at two snorkel sites on its fast catamaran, the Reef Express, for $73 per person, rated 4.6 from 203 on Viator. It departs at 10:30 and 14:00 from the Fury booth at 631 Greene Street, in front of Conch Republic Seafood. The listing names no reefs, and in a few low-star reviews rough seas kept the boat away from the better coral. Our Double Dip page weighs it against a single-reef trip. Our review
Dolphins: Fury Dolphin Watch and Snorkel
Fury’s 45-foot power catamaran looks for bottlenose dolphins first, then snorkels in the shallow water of the wildlife refuge, not on the outer reef. It costs $73 per person and is rated 4.7 from 1,247 on Viator. Dolphins are never guaranteed. For a smaller group and a guided snorkel, Honest Eco’s dolphin watch and guided snorkel is $143 for four hours, rated 4.9 from 598; the company says its biologists train the crew. The dolphin snorkel page has the rest. Our review
Small boat: Danger Charters
Danger Charters’ half-day trip sails a schooner into the Key West National Wildlife Refuge with a limit of 20 guests, then splits the time between kayaking and snorkeling in shallow, sheltered water. It is $125 per person on Viator (another option is $135), 4.5 hours, rated 4.9 from 1,832. Check-in is at the base of Opal Key Resort & Marina. This is backcountry snorkeling, so do not expect the outer reef. The catamaran vs small boat guide sets out the difference. Our review
Private: Danger Charters six-person charter
A 24-foot center console for up to six people costs $749 per group for four hours, rated 5.0 from 32 on Viator, with snorkel gear, snacks and soft drinks. It heads to sandbars and shallow snorkel spots. For less money, Stock Island Charters’ private sandbar trip is $500 per group of up to six for three hours, rated 5.0 from 52, and you bring your own food and drinks. See private snorkeling charters. Our review
Non-swimmers: the glass-bottom boat, or a shallow snorkel
Fury requires you to know how to swim on every snorkel trip, and Floridays recommends that you can. If someone in your group cannot, the Fury Glass-Bottom Boat ($64, about 1 hour 45 minutes, wheelchair accessible) shows them the reef through the hull. Its rating, 3.9 from 618 on Viator, is the lowest of the trips we review. For a hesitant swimmer who wants to try, Dolphin Echo’s shallow-water snorkel ($109, limited to 14 passengers, no free cancellation) is gentler. Our beginners page goes further. Our review
What every Key West trip has in common
The reef line sits about seven miles offshore on the Atlantic side, so a three-hour reef trip spends most of its time on the ride out and back. The captain chooses the site on the day according to wind and water conditions, and no listing on this site guarantees a named reef. Our reef snorkeling page explains Sand Key, Rock Key and Eastern Dry Rocks.
Coral is not what it was. NOAA reports that the 2023 marine heatwave killed 98 to 100 percent of elkhorn and staghorn colonies around the Keys. You will still see fish, sponges and some coral, but several low-star reviews come from people who expected a postcard reef. Marine life and visibility are never promised.
Alcohol is served after snorkeling on the Fury and Sunset Watersports trips. Fury asks you to arrive 30 minutes before departure with photo ID. Reef-safe sunscreen is a Fury rule and a NOAA recommendation, not a city law.
Reading Key West snorkeling reviews
Across the big catamarans the same complaints recur in two- and three-star reviews: a full boat, choppy water that makes it hard to see, short time in the water, and crews pushing for tips. On windy days a boat may move to a calmer, plainer site or cancel. If water time matters most to you, Floridays’ hour at the reef and the small backcountry boats answer the commonest complaint.
Which company to choose
- Fury Water Adventures runs the largest range: reef, sunset, Double Dip, dolphins, sandbar and the glass-bottom boat, from Opal Key Resort & Marina and 631 Greene Street.
- Sunset Watersports sails the Sandie Cat and dolphin boats from 201 William Street at the Historic Seaport. Our Fury vs Sunset Watersports guide compares them.
- Sebago runs morning and afternoon catamarans from Lazy Way Lane at the Historic Seaport.
- Floridays leaves from a hotel’s back dock, where its listing says it is the only sailboat.
- Danger Charters and Key West Schooners sail schooners into the backcountry; Key West Schooners’ backcountry trip is $119 for five hours, rated 4.9 from 114.

Best Key West Snorkeling Tours: FAQ
Short answers on choosing a trip, what it costs and if you need a tour at all.
For most people we would book the Floridays Reef Snorkel & Sail: $79 per person, three hours, about an hour at the reef, drinks included, rated 4.7 from 569 reviews on Viator (checked November 2026). On a tighter budget, Fury's morning reef snorkel is $49 on GetYourGuide. For a small group, Danger Charters' schooner trip is rated 4.9 from 1,832 reviews. See our Floridays review.
No official body ranks the Keys. Key West's reef line sits about seven miles offshore, with Sand Key, Rock Key and Eastern Dry Rocks among the reefs operators name. Key Largo has John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, and the Lower Keys have Looe Key, which NOAA lists as a Mission: Iconic Reefs site. Our Key West vs Key Largo guide compares them.
It depends on where you are staying. If you are staying in Key West, the reef trips here leave from the Old Town waterfront and need no drive. Looe Key's boats leave from the Lower Keys, roughly 30 miles up the Overseas Highway, and Key Largo is further still. See the best snorkeling spots in Key West.
For most visitors, yes, if you expect fish, sponges and some coral, not a postcard reef. NOAA reports that the 2023 marine heatwave killed almost all the elkhorn and staghorn coral around the Keys, and low-star reviews often come from choppy, cloudy days. Read is snorkeling in Key West worth it.
On the trips we review, a shared reef trip costs $49 to $79 per person, a small-group sail $119 to $159 per person, and a private boat $500 to $966 per group of up to six (checked November 2026). Tips are extra. See how much snorkeling costs in Key West.
Yes, from shore at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, which charges a park entry fee. The rocks and jetties there hold fish, but the offshore reef is about seven miles out and needs a boat. Bring water shoes for the rocky shoreline. See Key West shore snorkeling.
Fury Water Adventures has the widest range and leaves from Opal Key Resort & Marina and 631 Greene Street. Sunset Watersports and Sebago run catamarans from the Historic Seaport. Danger Charters and Key West Schooners sail schooners with smaller groups into the backcountry. Compare the two biggest in Fury vs Sunset Watersports.
