How It Works

Four simple steps to your booking.

  1. Choose the time of day

Morning trips usually leave around 9 a.m., afternoon trips around 12:30 to 1 p.m., and sunset combos in the late afternoon. Most reef trips last about three hours.

  2. Check where the boat leaves

Departure points differ by operator: the Historic Seaport, Opal Key Resort & Marina on Front Street, or a marina on Stock Island. The booking page and your voucher give the exact dock.

  3. Book with free cancellation

Most trips we review can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before departure. Check the policy on your listing, because a few are final sale.

  4. Snorkel the reef the captain picks

Masks, fins and flotation vests are supplied. The crew chooses the reef on the day by wind and water conditions, and gives a briefing before you get in.

How a reef trip runs

A Reef Trip, Step by Step

A standard Key West reef trip lasts about three hours, and only about a third of it is spent in the water. Floridays describes its trip as roughly an hour sailing out, an hour at the reef and an hour sailing back, and Fury puts its snorkel time at about 30 to 60 minutes of the three hours. The boat ride is most of the trip, so pick a boat you will enjoy sitting on.

  1. Check in 30–60 minutes before departure — Fury, Floridays and Danger Charters ask you to arrive 30 minutes early; Sunset Watersports asks for 60 minutes. Fury wants photo ID and a credit card at check-in on most trips, and the dock differs by operator, so follow the directions on your voucher.
  2. Waivers and gear — Every guest signs a liability waiver on Fury's trips, and minors need an adult chaperone with ID. The crew hands out a mask, snorkel, fins and a flotation vest, and explains how to use them.
  3. The run out to the reef, about an hour — The living reef lies about seven miles offshore. On morning trips such as Sunset Watersports' Rise & Reef, breakfast is served on the way out. Fury keeps the alcohol closed until after you snorkel.
  4. The captain picks the spot — The site depends on the weather on the day, and no listing promises a named reef. At protected reefs such as Sand Key and Eastern Dry Rocks, boats tie up to mooring buoys, because anchoring on coral is prohibited.
  5. In the water, about 30–60 minutes — Fury puts snorkel time at about 30 to 60 minutes and Floridays at about an hour; Fury's Double Dip splits the time between two stops. Keep off the coral, and if you need a rest, float on your back. Fury says turtles are often seen around Rock Key, but no sighting is guaranteed.
  6. Rinse off and open the bar — Back on board there is a freshwater rinse or hose, and on Fury's trips the beer, wine and cocktails come out now.
  7. The ride back, about an hour — The return leg is the relaxed part of the trip. On afternoon departures such as Fury's 4 p.m. Rum and Reggae trip or Danger Charters' afternoon sail, the ride back is timed with the sunset.

Before you book

How to Choose a Key West Reef Trip

Time of day, boat size, one reef or two, when the drinks come out, where the boat leaves and what winter does to the water.

For a first reef trip from Key West, our pick is Floridays Reef Snorkel & Sail: from $79 per person when we checked in November 2026, rated 4.7 from 569 reviews on Viator. It sails at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. with a limited number of guests. For the shortlist by budget, group size and time of day, our page on the best Key West snorkeling tours answers which trip to book. This guide covers the choices behind it.

Morning, afternoon or sunset

Most reef trips last about three hours. Morning boats leave around 9 a.m.: Floridays at 9:00, and Sunset Watersports’ Rise & Reef trip at 9:00 with a light breakfast on board. Afternoon trips leave between 12:30 and 1 p.m., and Fury’s Rum and Reggae sunset combo leaves at 4 p.m. and sails back as the light goes. The reef is the same at either time, so pick the slot that suits your day. Our morning, afternoon and sunset snorkel pages compare departures, and morning vs afternoon snorkeling weighs them up.

Big catamaran or small boat

The budget trips run on big catamarans. Fury’s reef trip and Sunset Watersports’ morning trip both use 65-foot boats with open decks and a freshwater rinse. They are stable and cheap; the usual low-star complaint is a crowded boat. Floridays sails a single sailboat with fewer guests.

Danger Charters’ half-day sail, snorkel and kayak trip goes out on a schooner limited to 20 guests, from $125 per person and rated 4.9 from 1,832 reviews on Viator. It is a different day out: 4.5 hours in the calm, protected water of the Key West National Wildlife Refuge, with kayaking, and its listing does not describe a stop on the offshore reef. Read catamaran vs small boat, or see private snorkeling charters for a boat to yourselves.

One reef or two

The living reef sits about seven miles offshore, and the captain picks the site on the day. Fury’s listings say the snorkel locations depend on the weather and are at the captain’s discretion, and Fury puts snorkel time at about 30 to 60 minutes. Sand Key, Rock Key and Eastern Dry Rocks are among the reefs a crew may choose, with NOAA giving depths of about 5 to 35 feet across them. If one stop sounds short, Fury’s Double Dip makes two stops in the same three hours, from $73 per person and rated 4.6 from 203 reviews on Viator. The double dip snorkel page and our guide to the best snorkeling spots in Key West explain the trade-off.

Drinks come after the water

Most reef trips include beer, wine or cocktails. On Fury’s trips the alcohol is poured only once snorkeling ends, and Fury turns away guests who arrive under the influence. Sunset Watersports serves breakfast on the way out and drinks on the sail back. The Floridays listing does not say when its drinks come out, so ask at check-in. Low-star reviews of the big boats often mention a choppy ride and seasick passengers, and the CDC lists limiting alcohol among the ways to avoid seasickness, so swim first and drink on the ride home.

Where the boats leave

There is no single snorkel dock. Fury’s reef trips check in at Opal Key Resort & Marina, 241 Front Street, while its Double Dip and dolphin trips use a booth at 631 Greene Street. Danger Charters is at the base of the Opal Key Resort too. Sunset Watersports is based at 201 William Street at the Historic Seaport and asks you to arrive 60 minutes early; Fury and Floridays ask for 30 minutes. Some private charters leave from marinas on Stock Island. Your voucher gives the exact dock. Fury provides no parking, and the city’s Old Town garage charges $6 an hour or $48 a day, plus tax. See where to stay for snorkeling.

Winter trips

Boats run through the winter, but conditions change. The Key West harbour gauge averages about 72.5 °F in January, 73.8 °F in February and 75.3 °F in December, and Fury says reef water can dip into the mid-60s. The National Park Service notes that winter is windier than summer, so seas are usually rougher when cold fronts pass. Operators do not sail in unsafe weather, and Fury says it will try to reschedule you during your stay, so book early in your trip. Danger Charters includes wetsuits in the winter months, and Fury’s listings offer wetsuits to rent in season. See snorkeling in winter and the water temperature by month.

What it costs

Fury’s reef snorkel on GetYourGuide costs from $49 per person for the morning trip and $57 for the afternoon or sunset departure, the lowest price among the trips we review, and it is rated 4.5 from 615 reviews on GetYourGuide. The other big-boat morning and afternoon trips cost from $59 to $60, Floridays from $79 and the Danger Charters half day from $125. A private boat starts from $500 per group of up to six with Stock Island Charters’ private sandbar trip. Gratuities are extra, and Fury adds an automatic 10% for groups of eight or more. The cost of snorkeling and cheap snorkeling pages break it down.

Kids and non-swimmers

Swimming rules are set by each operator. Fury says you must know how to swim, though every guest gets a flotation device, and it points non-swimmers to its glass-bottom boat. Floridays recommends being comfortable in water over your head. On Fury’s trips, guests aged 14 and under need a chaperone of 18 or over on board. For a gentler start, Dolphin Echo’s shallow-water snorkel and dolphin trip is limited to 14 passengers, from $109 per person and rated 4.6 from 476 reviews on Viator, but it has no free cancellation. See snorkeling for beginners, family snorkeling and the glass-bottom boat.

Reef rules

Do not touch, kick or stand on coral, living or dead, and take nothing from the water. To rest, float on your back. The Key West ban on oxybenzone sunscreen never took effect, because a 2020 Florida law left sunscreen rules to the state. NOAA still recommends a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium oxide, plus a rash guard, and Fury requires reef-safe sunscreen and hands out mineral sunscreen on its snorkel trips. The 2023 marine heatwave killed almost all the elkhorn and staghorn coral around the Keys, so expect reef fish, sponges and some coral, with no sighting guaranteed.
